Targeted Attacks on GPS Members: A Growing Concern in Senegal

In the serene coastal town of Mbour, Thies, the tranquil atmosphere was shattered in May 2023 when an unknown extremist Islamic group launched a violent attack at the residence of Mr. Ibrahima Ndoye.

Mr. Ndoye was targeted as a member of the Group Patriotique du Senegal (GPS), whose harrowing experience serves as a testament to the resilience of the community in the face of adversity.

Mr. Ndoye, a dedicated member of GPS, had always been vocal about his commitment to peace and unity in his region of Mbour, Thies, Senegal. As an advocate for social justice and cohesion through the chapter of  the GPS organization, he actively participated in community initiatives aimed at fostering understanding and cooperation among diverse groups. However, his unwavering dedication to these principles made him a target for those who sought to spread fear and division.

On the fateful day of his attack, Mr. Ndoye recalled that he  was at home with his siblings when the tranquility of the evening was shattered by the sound of gunfire and explosions. Without warning, a group of armed militants stormed into their neighborhood, spreading chaos and destruction in their wake. As panic ensued, Mr. Ndoye’s instincts and those of his other family members kicked in as they quickly ran to safety and hid in an undetectable hidden room within their home.

Huddled together in fear, Mr. Ndoye and his siblings listened helplessly as the violence raged outside of their home. The attackers, driven by their extremist ideology, showed no mercy as they unleashed a wave of terror upon the unsuspecting residents of Mbour Thies. In the midst of the chaos, Ndoye remained steadfast, drawing strength from his unwavering belief in the ideals of peace and unity.

Despite the danger that lurked outside their door, Ndoye refused to succumb to fear. Instead, he focused on keeping his siblings safe and reassured them with words of comfort and hope. Hours passed like an eternity as they waited for the violence to subside, unsure of what the dawn would bring.

When the morning light finally broke through the darkness, the true extent of the devastation became painfully clear. His home was ransacked and the streets bore the scars of the previous night’s carnage. But amidst the terror, there were signs of resilience and solidarity as neighbors came together to support Mr. Ndoye in their times of need.

For Ndoye, the attack was a stark reminder of the fragility of peace and the ever-present threat of extremism. But it also reinforced his determination to stand firm in the face of adversity and to continue his work towards building a more inclusive and harmonious society as fostered through his GPS organizational agenda.

As they rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the attack, Mr. Ndoye went into hiding but remained committed to his principles, undeterred by the challenges that lies ahead. Through his resilience and courage, he was able to abscond to the United States, where he  currently lives.

Ndoye’s story serves as a beacon of hope for his community, inspiring others to join the GPS group in the fight against hatred and division.

Though the scars of that fateful night may never fully heal, Ndoye refuses to let fear dictate his future.

With unwavering resolve, he remains steadfast with his group believing that love will always triumph over hate, and that together, the people of Senegal can overcome any obstacle that stands in their way to actualizing human rights for all.
