GPS Member Khaly Diop Urges Senegal Government to Dissolve JAMRA

After the recent election in Senegal, our organization, The Patriotic Group of Senegal (GPS) is making a compelling plea to the government of Senegal, urging it to dissolve JAMRA  the Islamic organization, citing various concerns regarding its influence and activities.

Our group is known for its advocacy for human rights, secularism, and social justice, and has raised significant apprehensions about JAMRA’s impact on Senegalese society. Foremost among these concerns is the perceived infringement on individual freedoms and civil liberties. Despite its religious identity, JAMRA has been accused of attempting to impose its conservative interpretations of Islam on the populace, advocating for laws that restrict personal freedoms, such as dress codes and behavior, which GPS argues contradict the essence of a secular democracy.

Another troubling aspect highlighted by our group is JAMRA’s purported promotion of intolerance and discrimination, particularly targeting marginalized groups like women and the LGBTQ+ community. The rhetoric employed by JAMRA, according to GPS, fosters a culture of exclusion and persecution, undermining Senegal’s commitment to pluralism and equality.

Moreover, GPS has expressed unease over JAMRA’s political influence, asserting that its substantial following and organizational infrastructure enable it to sway public opinion and mobilize support for its agenda. This, GPS contends, undermines democratic processes by stifling dissent and limiting the diversity of voices in politics.

In response to these concerns, GPS is calling upon the Senegalese government to take decisive action by dissolving JAMRA and ensuring that its activities adhere to democratic principles, human rights, and pluralism. This necessitates a thorough investigation into JAMRA’s operations and holding its leadership accountable for any legal violations or encroachments on individual rights.

However, the issue of dissolving JAMRA is complex. While GPS and its allies view it as a threat to Senegal’s democratic values, supporters of JAMRA argue that it plays a vital role in upholding traditional Islamic values and providing support to the Muslim community. Thus, any attempt to dissolve JAMRA is expected to face staunch opposition from its followers, who may perceive it as an assault on their religious identity.

Nonetheless, GPS remains resolute in its advocacy for democracy, human rights, and secularism in Senegal. By challenging the influence of groups like JAMRA, GPS aims to foster a more inclusive and tolerant society, free from discrimination and oppression. Whether the Senegalese government will heed these calls and address the concerns raised by GPS remains to be seen.
